How to Keep Your Home Cool

During the summer months, everyone will be trying to beat the heat. However, blasting your home’s AC to the max will lead to steep energy bills. Here are a few other ways to help keep things cool.

Invest in Blackout Shades

It’s no secret that the sun’s powerful UV rays can cause your home’s interior to heat up quickly. Blackout shades are well worth the money. They do a great job of blocking sunlight, which means your AC unit won’t have to work as hard. Research shows that installing blackout shades over the windows can reduce energy consumption by 10 to 25 percent. If you don’t currently have blacked-out shades, keep your curtains closed during the day.

Use Your Thermostat Properly

Your thermostat’s temperature setting is important. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, setting your thermostat to 78 degrees in the summer is the best approach. Not only will your AC run more efficiently, but your family will also be able to relax in a cool home. If you plan to be away for most of the day, program your thermostat to raise the temperature by around seven degrees. This will help you to save even more energy.

Open the Windows in the Morning and Evening

As soon as you awake during the morning, be sure to open a few windows. This helps funnel fresh air into the home, which ultimately reduces indoor humidity levels. When outdoor temperatures start to drop in the evening time, reopen your windows.

Take Advantage of Ceiling Fans

Many people purchase ceiling fans to enhance their home’s styling. However, ceiling fans can also help cool down your home. During hot summer weather, be sure to switch your fan blades to spin in a counter-clockwise direction. This creates a relaxing windchill effect.
